Culture has become a big deal. There is more focus on building cultures that foster success and innovation in companies around the world now than there ever has been. It wasn’t always this way. Business owners and CEO’s used to have many other things ahead of culture when it came to priorities.

Now, things are different. From start-up small businesses to large corporations, everyone these days is focused on building a company culture to get the most out of their employees. Those who have successfully done it are reaping the rewards leaving many other companies wondering what they’re doing wrong.

One of the most common misconceptions about creating a culture is that it’s all about giving stuff away. We hear of so many businesses these days who talk about building a culture by providing more free snacks or providing massage chairs in the break room. While these are nice perks, they don’t necessarily build culture as effectively as, say, the design and decoration of your office.

Decorating for Success

The truth is, while employees love free food, they love working for a company with a focus on success even more. Believe it or not, everyone wants to be and feel successful. When an employee walks into an office that has been carefully and strategically designed and decorated for success, it will have a direct impact on their desire to contribute.

Start by making sure your entire office reflects your brand. This includes colors, logos and signage that match your identity and vision. Do your employees know and understand your company’s core values by simply looking around the office? Do you have signs and banners up that remind them of the company’s goals?

Let Employees Get Involved

Next, let your employees have some freedom and input when it comes to decorating. Allow them to bring in their own decorations and artwork that gives them a chance to express themselves. This not only fosters an environment of creativity, but also builds a sense of morale and community.

Effective Break Rooms

Effective common spaces or break rooms do not have to be stocked full of
snacks, but they should be spacious enough to promote a bit of relaxation and collaboration. Decorate your break rooms with colors and furniture that give your employees a place to unwind and feel appreciated. You’ll find that this goes a long way when it comes to productivity.
